I've recently registered a .ORG domain for a new posting site... Someone just told me after I have completed the site that .ORG is for non-profit only, does it matter?

That used to be. The "rules" were eventually relaxed for CNO (com, net, org).

from the search engines view, it doesn't matter.

I only know of nic.mx (the registrant of all .mx domains) who asks you to be a real non-profit organization before giving you the domain.
