Hi. I've just entered on sun microsystems site and what do I see on the first page? Oracle buy Sun? Will this be the end of mysql because we all know that sun bought mysql , and also Oracle will want to promote their own database. Please write your opinions about this. will this be the end for mysql?
probably not. but they can stop or slow down the development of mysql and promote their own products. The fact is that mysql started to grow up and provide more and more professional services becoming more and more a threat to oracle. I think oracle will keep mysql as a low end database service( without developing it ) and this might be a sad day for us the ones that love mysql
If Oracle try to shut down MySQL something else will take its place. But I don't think they would do it.
I'm sure that even if they do want to promote another server language, they'd still keep MySQL available because of the large user base. One possibility is that they would upgrade MySQL less frequently and offer a paid service that upgraded more often and offered more features.
IMO ORACLE should forget their own database. They should go with the MySQL. If just for the back end point of view IMO I rather go with MySQL. But ORACLE is not just all about database though
My big concern is that mysql will never become a more professional database (and free ofcourse) because oracle will try to promote their own databases(for lots of money) and keep mysql with few features as a low end database. I think it's a very good move for oracle but this is not so good for us
