Sun is an extremely innovative company, which definitely contributes to MySQL's success. Java of course made them famous.

Oracle runs on Java? on top of a virtual machine? uh, no. Oracle is written in C. And it *supports* Java.

Oracle is good for large databases and/or databases with tons of users/transactions.

    MySQL is for small/mid-sized projects.

MySQL has a long way to go before it can challenge Oracle. :)

I use to do work for a firm for experience and they used an Oracle database as it handled more data and was taking up to 1.5million transactions / changes to the database a minute.

I've pushed our an enterprise MySQL server to a few thousand per second which is still a long way off from the 20 - 25,000 per second that your was. That's a pretty amazing figure.

I think DB2 and MySQL will take over the Oracle..
DB2 has good RDBMS, reliability, performance,
and MySQL is open source. everyone loves it :)

Wow! Seems like as the thread gets longer more and more erroneous information and comments keep getting added. At an enterprise level, mySQL can never come close to Oracle with features, functionality and performance. Just recently with mySQL 5, they barely added some of the functionality that was available with Oracle back in Oracle 8i.
People talk about this or that search engine using mySQL successfully but those are all non-standard mySQL instances custom compiled for the purpose.

I think MySQL is already very popular, most CMS's use MySQL, I have never really found a CMS or forum system that just uses Oracle and doesn't have MySQL compatibility...

It's a commercial db system from IBM. http://www-01.ibm.com/software/data/db2/

My school offers a course on DB2, but it's not part of the database management program, so I would assume it's not worth learning about.

Oracle is more reliable because you can find someone to request help when u have problems. Expert people can help you with the problems you have. For mysql, you should need to research the web to get proper solution. That is one another reason why firms prefer oracle.

According to me i have used mssql, oracle and mysql so far. And i can say that performance issues at oracle is really disgusting. It is very hard to get good performance without an expert from Oracle if you are working with huge amount of data. If i have been the decision maker for this topic, i would seriously consider SQL Server 2008.

This thread has came a long way. I think Oracle is better for large, mission-critical, community sites with high traffic and tonnes of users at any point in time. MySQL on the other hand is good for managing non-community sites, or sites with lower traffic and information.

Personally I find oracle better than mysqL, oracle can run & handle more transactions than MysQL. just use oracle if you are going to have lots of db usage and you ll see good result!.
