I notice quite a few threads here about SEO optimization and in particular about keywords and 'how many' keywords. It seems to me, from some considerable research, that keywords are FAR LESS important than they used to be. Although the algorithms used by Search Engines like Google are wrapped in corporate secrecy that make the Pentagon look like a child's piggy bank, we do know that there is an increasing trend towards 'long-tail' keywords. Thee are not so much individual words but short three or four word phrases. And this makes sense when you consider how most people actually use Search Engines. Think about it for a moment, do you actually ever type in a 'single' keyword on Google? Or do you use a search 'phrase' to find what you are looking for? Google, for example, is such a sophisticated tool and the internet so enormous that a single keyword is almost worthless. Would you search for 'dogs' or 'how to train dogs'? Long tail key phrases are actually much more useful to target your SEO optimisation than single keywords. Identify your main long tail key phrases and type them into google like this: allintitle:how to train dogs This produces relevant search results for that phrase and, more importantly, the density and popularity of that particular phrase - useful to assess the competitiveness of that phrase and highlights websites with the highest density of hits, Page Rank (PR) and popularity. So, while single keywords are useful, their usefulness is limited and you should build your main SEO efforts around long tail phrases for maximum efficiency.
