I use in my blog all-in-one-seo-pack but for make blog 100% friendly to google you must add this plugin: google-sitemaps-generator

    Plugin features:
"This plugin generates a XML-Sitemap compliant sitemap of your WordPress blog. This format is supported by Google, YAHOO and MSN Search."

You should no index your categories root list via robots.txt to avoid misplaced indexed content.

First thing I always do is to make sure there is no duplicate content, since a standard wordpress installation would produce LOADS of DC due to the category/date based archives. One solution would be http://hiegl.net/search-engine-management/, but plenty of WP Seo packages contain something similar or you can do it yourself via robots.txt

In most cases you don't need a site map, google will find all your pages without one.

You are right and wrong. Wordpress by itself is SE friendly because it's a blog(even blogger is friendly that way) but if you can manage some tweaks like the custom permalinks, (which by default isnt opted in WP) then you can get the edge over others.

Wp is the coolest blogging tool around by the way!
