i just made a website mainly in css . page optimizer online programs says download time is fine, green for good..etc. and page size is only 17kb...But...I have an external javascript header ( for SEO) with a 110kb jpeg image..anything to worry about.....? the online program did not find the header image during page load. since the net is moving towards more graphics, flash, videos, videomail..etc. is that anything to worry about.. ? plus more folks are getting high speed connections. dial up is like ...using cassettes in a car...yeah I still have my cassettes though...can't let go.
Three ideas to consider, since 110k is pretty significant for many users -- 1. Optimize the image to reduce its k weight. There are free online tools to do this. It degrades the image, but only a bit -- and the savings can be considerable. 2. Ensure the script is run *after* there is visible pageloading activity on the site. Users will be more patient if they can see that something is coming (even if slowly). 3. Slice the image up and load the pieces individually. This allows users to see something quickly, rather than waiting for a massive single image. ... and, obviously, check your log data and common sense to gauge how savvy (and high-speed) your users are. If they're all at work on brand new PC's, your problem is different than grandmas using dial-up AOL
110kb jpeg shall be a huge picture. How can you put a big picture as the header? Maybe you shall change it gif to descrease the size.
