Optimizing Google Maps

I and our clients have been approached about showing up as one of the 10 in the Google Map for keyword searches in Google. Our entire concentration has till now has been in the organic area of our clients keyword targets.

Can any of our forum members share what they know on the subject of ranking in the Google Maps?

I do believe this area of the page would benefit our clients that are not go to such as a plumber or tree service. I myself would look at the map when looking for a dentist or auto repair.

I hope this subject will get some interest.

    Thanks

I'd say that there are no real rules at the moment. Maps seems to be changing as it goes along so if you believe that Yours is the type of business that people would search for on a map, you may want to keep your ear to the ground.

    - There are printable coupons you can add (makes sense for all sorts of businesses)
    - You can buy ads (I don't think google 've worked this out totally yet. I'd expect that they are waiting for the ship to appear out of the mist a bit more before building a mature advertising model from this).
    - Some business types in some places can accept booking (indirectly) via google maps.

A good start would be adding your business (web pages are, I believe merely associated with 'listings' rather then being listing I believe) or editing it if your already on it.
A second move may be buying some ads to see if it seems to have potential. (even if just to see how many impressions you generate for various terms)

This is not really search engine optimization, and there are all sorts of things popping up that you can do at the recommendation of google.

I've noticed that when the business is located in the closest city, it tends to get higher ranking. Make sure that all the relevant keywords are used, and uploading a photo or logo won't do any harm! :)

for google maps, it's helpful to have your address in the footer of your template and on the contact page.
it'll help google "find" you and place you on the map.

I misunderstood the question. I see you're already targeted for google maps.
These are some optimization tips for google maps:
    1. Register the business in the Google Maps locally
    http://www.google.com/local/add/lookup?welcome=false&hl=en-US&gl=US

    2. When it suggests categories for your service/business, ignore that. this is where you input your keywords - optimize this.
    3. Add a lot of descriptions/photos/etc.
    4. Get backlinks with targeted anchor text pointing to your listing
    5. Have clients write reviews on your business in the google maps listing
