Optimizing ad performance

    I have two questions:

    1. Is there a way of graphing your keyword's rank every day to see if google is rewarding you with a good rank based upon your high ctr? If not, do you track the movement rankings of your keywords easily?

2A. If I have a losing campaign with lots of impressions where all of the adgroups are losers, could I delete all of the adgroups and start over and that data wouldn't hurt me, or would I have to delete the whole campaign.

2B. What if I had 1/10 adgroups that did really well and the rest losers, could I delete the 9 and the 1 wouldn't be harmed by the other groups past performance?

2C. What if I have an adgroup and 99% of the keywords are losers and I delete them all and keep 1 that was really good, would that keyword be hurt by all of the other keywords' past performance?

So basically when can I keep stuff and when do I have to delete entire group/keyword/campaign/ad?

    AFAIK ...

    1. I have a home built solution (I'm a software developer by trade, and have worked extensively with the Google Adwords API) for this, but I don't know what most advertisers use (if anything)

2a, 2b - I believe the performance is calculated at the adgroup level, not the campaign level.

2c - The adgroup will still retain the effects of the past performance, but as time goes by this gets less and less based on the remaining keyword's performance. However, you're better off adding those 99% of the keywords to your negative keyword list rather than just delete them. Read the following for more information:

    1. Check out the "Reports" tab in your Adwords account. You can create graphs, including daily graphs of CTR, position and CPC.

Ok, so if I have an adgroup that does poorly for a month, I would want to take out the worst performing keywords and make a new adgroup right? Could I name it the exact same name or should I ad 2 or some character to the end so google doesn't still think it's the same adgroup?

Each adgroup has an ID associated with it. Creating a new adgroup will have a new ID. The name is just for your convenience.

However, you don't *need* to create a new adgroup just to remove keywords (or preferably add them as negative keywords), as you'll lose any benefit that *has* been built up in terms of quality/history.

Even if I get rid of the poor performing ones though, the adgroup will still have their previous performance in its history right? Or if you delete a keyword, does that whole keyword history get removed from the adgroup?

The main reason that I am deleting keywords right now is that even my $.51 bids are only ranking me 60th for some keywords.
