Is it reasonable to optimize my homepage for 2 different, but related keyword phrases? I am going after 2 keyword phrases and currently I have them both on my homepage with appropriate density (I think)...One phrase is used in the title tag, in the text, and the title of my page (H1), the other is used in the text and in the H2, and H3 tags. My inbound links alternate between using both keyword phrases. I am just wondering if I would be better off focusing on one or the other, or if it is realistic to optimize for both with good results. Thanks.
Your approch is ok as far as two keywords are related... (can type together for keyword search).. It is easy to optimize 2 keyword phrases than one keyword...
Check for higher search volume on these 2 keywords, try google trends for that. Whichever is the higher is probably a better converting keyword. But it never hurts to try and focus on both equally. Dependent upon the amount of copy you have on your page, you could try and optimize for as many as 4 or 5 keywords if you have enough content to balance it out. You're definitely on the right track
Both of the keyword phrases (2 words in each phrase) have nearly the same number of searches based on overture data. I do not have a great deal of text on the homepage (about 350 words). I have many links to new articles and popular articles because I am trying to get the visitors to go to those pages. Thanks for the feedback
What you are doing is fine, i often do pages with several keyphrases all ranking page one with over 100 million results per phrase.
