Optimal # of Product Options in DropDown Menus

    So here is the issue:

We have a bunch of furniture products that can potentially have 20 different color combinations with 4 different fabric materials. When the customer orders the product, it is then custom made to their chosen color and fabric options.

Has anyone tested the optimal # of options in a dropdown or the maximum recommended option # in a dropdown that will give the customer enough options and yet not scare them away?

I firmly believe in NOT dumbing down my sites and giving people 5 options when they can easily customize things but I also do not want to scare them away. :D

    Anyone tested this?

I can imagine having that many options may be a delimma.

Just an idea, this may take some time, but if all of your patterns and colors are the same for each furniture type it may be helpful to create a small graphical swatch with the actual pattern and actual color with radio checkboxes next to each one.

This would please the customer and make choosing more interesting.
