Any thoughts on this? I recently wrote a blog entry that exceeded 1000 words and was thinking it might be best to split it into two (or more) parts and post the whole thing over a few days. And does anyone have any good links to share on marketing/writing good blogs? Much appreciated!
Well I don't think 1000 words is too long for a blog post. I would say basic rule of thumb is just to say what needs to be said in a way people can understand it. Repeating the same thing or over simplifying is something that can lengthen a post without really giving it any value. Unless of course the reason for the post is to address some particular issue on a begginer level. If a post was 2000 words it wouldn't bother me. I myself however like to write so I may not be the best person to ask. I see your point though, if you readers are looking for bite size pieces of info and you throw a elephant at them they may get overwhelmed. If you are going to set a limit I think you are on the right track. 500-1000 words is probably about right. Although it really does depend on your demographics. If your readers are teens keep it under 500 words if your readers are 50-60 year olds and your topic say cancer or something else health related you could easily write a 3000 word post and they would read all of it. My two cents anyway. MAtt
I agree with loopline. The length seems ok, and should be determined by the content and audience like he said. If possible, you could try and add on to the article and split it up into multiple posts related to a similar theme. Of course, if the overall article will suffer by doing this, then don't. Here is an excellent article on 'mind mapping', from ProBlogger which explains it better.
The only benefit of spliting a post up is it gives you an opportunity to say: Subscribe to my RSS feed so that you dont miss the rest of this series! If gives your readers another reason to come back.
