Opinions on dashes in URL

    Hi all,

I have a good URL which I would like to purchase with good keywords. Only problem is that they're all taken..I can grab one with a dash between one of the 3 keywords though (.net, .com is taken). What are your opinions with the dash domain names in regards to SEO?

I think dashes in names are better for seo and use them myself.

Yeah the dash can be advantageous for seo. Just avoid domain names with more than 1 or 2 dashes.

The only real drawback is that visitors would have a tougher time remembering the url.

first use the domain with dash for your main Site.
Then register another domain without dash and redirect it to your main site with dash! for visitors that type your domain without Dash!!!
i thin its a good idea.

Google recommends the use of Hyphens (-).

1 in the domain name and 3 max in the file/directory name

Sure, dashes are the way to go, but is anyone going to remember it when you tell them?

I was reading an EBook the other day, I forget which one. But it was a good book, I have read so many recently. I remember the author said not to discount those types of names. He did say you should always get Com. though.

-'s are treated like spaces to google, I've had great success with them in my domains. More than 1 dash per domain name is bad though, treated as spam.

In files, -'s are better than _'s i've found.

I am not a big fan of dashes, however, ultimately it comes down to branding your site, with or without dash.

I've personally had experience, Jean, with using more than 3 - it doesnt work too well. You get penalized for months before gaining rank for your term.

In terms of SEO, having dashes would not make any significant difference compared to the one without dash. However, it would be a good idea to avoid having more than 3 in total.

seo proceeds on the domain name with a dash appear to be really slight.

I particularly use a hyphen for a site that I'm drawing crazy visits for and reaching into weird spaces of the internet.

I don't think domain name with single *-* is hard to remember

and as far as seo is concerned dash or no dash doesn't mater
