Opinions on Best Catagory for Submission

Discussion in 'ODP / DMOZ' started by GuyFromChicago, Jan 12, 2006.

Sometime in the near future I'm going to submit Blish to dmoz.

I'll admit I'm at a bit of loss as to the best catagory (catagories?) to submit to. Advice and suggestions would be appreciated.

I would think, the best is Computers/Software/Retailers/, because i looked at all your products. They are all related to software.

And you can't put it in a more minor category in shopping (IMO) because the main products of your offer are so diverse, and not concentrated on books or video

    :)

The initial release is "software heavy", but we have thousands of products not related to software.

    For example.

I know that. But the single category in dmoz, that includes all of your products, is General_Merchandise

You think this will work for you more ?

Description : Offers a wide variety of digital content, ranging from audio and images to software and books. Users can be buyers or sellers.

It may, that's why I'm asking. I've had horrible luck getting sites listed in the past so I figured I would try a get a lot of opinions on where it should go. Thanks for the feedback...if you think of anything else that I should consider please let me know.

    Other opinions/suggestions?

Thanks again, and if anyone has any other suggestions please feel free to share.

    Update:

If you submit a site to a catagory, then that catagory gets updated and your site is not included does that mean you're out of luck...or still sitting in the que?

I submit the site listed at the start of this thread to 3 catagories that were suggested to me on Jan 12. All of the catagories have since been updated but no listing for me.

Anyone have any advice? Wait? Resubmit? Try different catagories?

Perhaps you slid right by http://dmoz.org/add.html which requires that you submit your website to the one best category. You acknowledged that you'd read and agreed it on each occasion though :) .
    Yes and yes.

Oh my God man. Jim himself gave you some insigths :)

I think it should've worked ok if you submitted to one single category, indeed.

From what i know, the editor (at his own disposal) will add the site in other categories too, it those are appropiate or relevant to the website's content.

But submitters should choose only one :)

    1 Yes
    2 Yes
    3 No never
4 No, that could be seen as spam and could get your site banned

Your confusion comes from the fact that being allowed to suggest a site once is something totaly different from a site being listed many times.

Everybody is allowed to suggest a site once.
Editors are allowed to list a site more than once.

Thanks for explanation...I obviously don't keep up on the all the rules/trends for getting listed. Now that I've broken the rules I guess I should just assume that site won't be listed at all:( Just seems odd to me (granted I know nothing about dmoz) that an editor thought some of the sites on that list deserve hundreds of listings but because the site I submit was submitted to three catagories I'm on the "no listing for you!" list.

Side question - what's to stop someone from submitting competitors new sites to multiple catagories in an effort to prevent them from ever being listed?

I didn't say that at all. I merely pointed out that you'd ignored our submission guidelines and recommended that you don't do it any more.

Gotcha. So at this point would you suggest that I just wait? If so, how long before I should try again? Thanks for you help:)

Just wait. There's no time at which a resubmission would be a good idea.

We'll get to your website in time. If it's listable, we'll list it - maybe after moving it a few times. If it's not, we won't. Resubmission won't make your website somehow more attractive :).

My advice to you is to forget about an ODP listing. If it's going to happen, it'll happen when it happens. Instead, concentrate your energies on adding more value and content to your website and to additional means of promotion.

Thanks for taking the time to answer questions I'm sure you've answered a million times already. Like I said, I don't really keep up with all the dmoz threads so I'm not exactly in the loop on all the ins and outs of dmoz.

I don't focus on the ODB, this is the first time I've submit a site in a long time. It's about 0.0000001% of my marketing effort. The site in question is in my sig...if anyone notices anything that would make it unlistable please let me know.

I'll keep my eyes on http://dmoz.org/Shopping/General_Merchandise/B/ for updates:)

I had set reminders in outlook to come back and check this thread/status of my listing every few months...still no ODP love.

Maybe we can call this the "here's how long you have to wait if you or your competitors submits your site more than once" experiment:)

ps - maybe listing 8 (Bangkok247) could be removed to make room for Blish;)
