I was just thinking.... Obviously we all now the major operating systems Windows, Linux, Unix etc etc I was thinking though generally when people think i will make a new OS it is based on Linux , probably as the basics are there and its just about tweaking it for what you want. However i was thinking are there any good programmers that have thought about getting together to create something totally new from the ground up? Getting rid of the bad coding practices as seen in windows and making it so windows designed programs will work on the new system? Making it aesthetically pleasing (eg XP, Vista) yet making it as fast as possible (Unlike Vista). Dont get me wrong my coding skills stopped after i made an advanced calculator for a computer shop in college about 3-4 years ago but i thought it might be a good idea to see if some people could get together to create a nice piece of software open source or paid for, if it was competatively priced (£30-40) then in theory you could wipe the floor with windows. Id be interested in helping out (brainstorming ideas, splitting projects up, project management etc) although as i said im not a programmer. Has this been done and followed through? If not would anyone be interested in it? If we could get a team of some quality programmers spending a few hours a week we could have something out by the end of the year? Tony
I would imagine so, Its a good idea though isnt it? I have a lot of ideas with this once there was a product in order to get this off the ground, could you imagine being part of something that is superier to the current market leader and less than half the price? Even something on the same level at half the price would become the market leader eventually but why would you aim to match another product, its always better to aim above and then if you fall short your still on the same level.
OK, is anyone else interested? We can maybe get a small goup together to start with? Discuss ideas/Suggestions and what not I would also imagine as its just coding to start with no money is needed to be invested, just time to start with. If anyone is seriously interested in this just put a post here and we can maybe start a small group to get this started?
Nice idea. I like the way you think. I tihnk it might take a lot of people to even roll you own Linux distro. Lots of people, lots of time.
I believe it would take a long time which is why im saying the end of the year to get something rolled out - obvious that would be something extremely basic from which to build on. Im sure everyone wants to be part of the next big thing and if you get the right team together theres no reason why it cant be. Nice to see only positive feedback so far. I would imagine a team of 5-10 would be ideal to start off with so i think we need to see a few more people who would be interested before it can go any further.
How big was your team? and How experienced? There may well be parts of the system already made which do the job just as well or better than windows and linux which are opensource on the internet meaning we could implament someparts of that into our system? As i said im not an expert but it would be nice to have a good crack at the whip, and i dont thin your being harsh just honest.
Ah well nobody has shown any real interest. It was a nice idea but nobody can seem to commit enough or any time to it other than an hour here or a few hours 1 week. If anyone is really interested in this post here and i will get back to all the replies next week and go from there.
