Opening the Directory source code - Advice needed.

Discussion in 'Directories' started by JamieG, Feb 27, 2008.

People who have been following my threads will know that we've been hinting at opening the phpLynx sourcecode to developers and the like who want to be able to work with the code to make it unique for their directories.

With this in mind I'd hope that those who've expressed interest in this issue before would offer me some advice and information on just what parts of the code they would need.

Obviously we'd have to protect our interests from the small amount and keep some of the code encrypted (a bit like vbulletin do) but that would be kept to a minimum based on the advice and feedback I get here.

Let's see if we can't find out how far we can put this opensource ethos to the test. Feedback appreciated thanks.

I'd obviously want to change the design/template.

Not sure what else. In my ZD, phpLD powered, I have several mods. Parsing my blog RSS feed and displaying it on the directory, showing icons next to categories and a few other things. These sort of things I would want to do.

Wow, people really don't know the power of our script Mikey? The features you mentioned are already as default and without modifying the script. :)

He has my iconMOD, and trust me, lynx does NOT compare to the SEO aspect nor the changeablity in styling it offers.

but anywho... i'd like the backend stuff to be unencrypted.

Yeah there is a lot more to the icon mod that meets the eye. I don't have to edit any files if I want to change it.

From the posts I've read An0n your not one to be humble now are you. ;) Oozing in seld confidence is the phrase that comes to mind. But that's cool, there's nothing wrong with self confidence, and we'd love to see you put your talents to the test with our code as long as its for the right reasons which I'm sure it will be. Have you got any examples of your 'iconmod' Rob? You can't get much more scaleable than uploading or updating a category icon via the ACP can you? Not sure what can be 'more' SE on an icon?

I personally would love to have you put your talents to the test as I've said a few weeks ago I think your a wasted talent and I'm not the only one. One thing is for sure, we'd be much more appreciative of you than others appear to have been in the past.

@Mikey, you don't have to edit anything with the phpLynx script regarding the adding of an icon to a category, you just upload one, its as simple as that.

We are planning to release most of the backend (not all) but most of it as this is needed for you to add functions into the control panel if I'm not mistaken? I'd like to have a private chat with you on something as well Rob, so look for a p.m okay.

It would all depend on which iconMOD you have from me haha... of course what I offer my peers is good, very good and thye are always pleased, however, what I have for myself is always 3 steps ahead. ;)

Only way for me to dive into things is to be able to see code and understand how everything works.

    I responded :)

A prince would be better than being a Queen!!? :p I'm rather surprised that after all the crying that went on over the code being closed nobody took the time to take me up on offering some input regarding opening the code. Makes you wonder if they really cared in the first place or were just using it as an excuse?

Is phplynx better than phpld? Also why phplynx is encrypted whereas all other directory scripts are not.

    In order:
Yes phpLynx is better than phpld for a number of reasons although I'm sure plenty of people will disagree even though they haven't tried phpLynx. I've tried them both, know their features, the support and the cost effectiveness of them both so make the comment based on that.

The phpLynx script is hard coded to prevent the small minority of people who like to steal code or remove backlinks without paying for it, and so on. That said if you read the title of this thread it points out we're planning on opening a majority of the code but in the same breath still preventing people from abusing this.

Queens are female. I am a male :p

I'm not making excuses. I just don't have time to test drive lynx at the moment. I'll come calling when I do though.
