I'd like to open a paypal account soon. But I am just wondering how this works and if this can be opened from any country (I am in South Africa) and how one transfers money between the paypal account and the normal bank account.

You can sign up for an account just like you can on DigitalPoint. You can withdraw money from your PayPal to bank, by linking your bank account to the account. Then it's verified ;)

You can open it from every country you like. And as Aquarezz wrote you can link your bank account and transfer money from and to paypal account.
You will find paypal services really great and easy to use soon ;D

Not each and every country supports PayPal.

You mean, you can't transfer money from a paypal account to accounts in every country:
    http://www.paypal.com/worldwide/
Seems different rules apply to different countries.

Yes, I'd like to register. Just that I first would like to make sure about procedures and implication.

You can signup from the paypal site easily. After signing up you need to add your bank account. At that time Paypal will be limited for you. After adding bank account they will send some small deposits like 1.11 or 1.76 or anything. Then you need to type those in paypal.Your paypal account is verified now.But it takes 5-7 business days.

It seems my country (South Africa) is not covered by Paypal for bank accounts. Must I use a bank account in another country?

You can look out for someone reliable and ask him if he could send you money from his bank account to yours, while you send money from your PayPal to his.

I could also open an account in another country. Actually I have a friend with accounts in Britain, while he stays here. I could come to an arrangement with him.

If you can open account in other country, you can do it, it is legal.
You your friend's name is more risky and not allowed by PP (If they find out).

As a South African, you can signup Paypal easily. You can send and receive funds without any problem. But the main problem is that you can't withdraw your money to South African bank accounts. Paypal not activate the service yet in SAF, even you can't withdraw to your credit/ debit cards yet. Hope Paypal will start their full services in your country very soon.
