If you want to learn a little bit more rather just using a CMS, then I would suggest symfony2

I would recommend Joomla. They have plenty of extensions to help get you started. It's fairly easy to install and learn.

I prefer Joomla than wordpress for developing websites. With joomla you can develop any kind of website. Joomla caters for the end users, designers and developers alike. It is very flexible, customizable. More than that it got plenty of extensions and templates.

My personal preference generally goes towards wordpress. Its fast , simple and easy. Even a simple beginner can understand wordpress in 1-2 days. To gets a hands-on experience on how things work , you can always register an account on wordpress.com and explore the possibilites of what you can do with it. Once satisfied you can buy hosting and domain and install it yourself.

Or you can download Wordpress and a web server (xampp if you run Windows) and run it on your own computer to get a feel for it.

They say over wordpress is taking over the internet. Over 55% of the world's internet is built with wordpress. Very easy and scaleable platform. Has thousands of themes and plugins. But be aware and install necessary security plugins. As they are very vulnerable to attacks/ hacks.
