Only VB or Phpbb

So is it only a choice between Vbulletein or Phpbb? Is there no other good forum software out there. I installed phpbb but then read that vbulletein was better. The fee made me cringe a little, however. I want to get something good now because I'm incredibly lazy and don't want to have to try and upgrade or change over to another forum software later. Any recommendations that may not cost as much as VB but doesn't need to be hacked like phpbb?

I LOVE vBulletin. I own 3 licenses for it because I like it so much. If you want to go free, there are good alternatives, but I would stay far away from phpBB. It gets hacked a lot and you need to keep it up to date all the time. But I really do highly recommend vB over anything else

i would rather use VB any time,
but.... failing that I would use smf http://www.simplemachines.org over phpbb any day. Any mods that you want to install can be done by the admin panel with a few clicks.

phpbb - easy, max plugins available, superb themes and is regularly updated.

I prefer phpBB and I've used both. It depends on what you want though, if you want a box stock install and don't want to do any modding then phpBB is a bad choice.

Thank you for all of your replies. I don't mind doing modifications. My main concern is site security. I don't want people being able to hack into my forum. So I guess the real question is which one is more secure?

I see a lot of my favorite forums using vbulletein. I may just bite the bullet and invest in it. Besides hosting fees, this'll be the first time I've actually spent money on the site.

hey great share @ sarahk , that website indeed providing lot of info and demos,

i would prefer a vbulletin only, if you have a budget go for vb

otherwise other options are always in hand
i like mybb, punbb other then phpbb

punbb is simple easy and very quick

    mybb looks good.

though i have myself experienced using almost all boards

After looking around the net for forum software I finally settled down with http://www.punbb.org which I find very good and fast forum software. With mods that are availible from http://www.punres.org you can make it like any other forum software out there!

You can see my two forums to get the feeling what can be done with punbb here : http://www.istoritve.com and http://www.goalchat.com

If you decide to go with punbb and need help skinning or modding I will be glad to help you !
