For a new website of mine I'd like to register a new domain name which contains 2 words. The .com is already taken, the .net is still available. Right now I'm thinking of registering either the .net (onlinewidgets.net) or the .com which has a hyphen between the 2 words (online-widgets.com, oddly enough the .net version of this is already taken). If you would register just 1 of the domain names, which one would you prefer?
I personally would go with the .net, only because I don't like dashes. I think any site without dashes is better.
.com, the - will make google recognise each word quicker, and whilst people may forget the - if they type the url manually, they would also be likely to type .com on the end by mistake too.
I think only if it's something techie should you go with a .net. Nobody but techies remember .net. ... I when I find that situation, I always keep looking for a different domain. Eventually I find a regular .com that I'm just as happy with. Sometimes it takes a while, but I ALWAYS find one that does the trick.
