online store : opencart vs prestashop

    Guys,

I am planning to setup an online store, and I am looking for something simple and free to do this, and I came across with open cart and presta shop.

Has anyone actually play around with both shopping cart and tell me what are the plus and minus of both shopping cart?

From the demo, I like opencart better, the GUI looks very clean and simple, whereas prestashop is sligthly more complicated...but when I googled seems like prestashop has more positive feedback than opencart...

I would appreciate if someone can share some opinions on this...

    Thanks

    RD

To help you with this decision cause i was also in this same predicament. I ended up choosing Open-cart and it was more user friendly and better features along with live help and frequent updates offered. Prestashop crew was extremely slow in answering my question for some help. The crew at open-cart i had over 4 people helping me to answer my questions.

I've been looking into this a lot lately too. I found that for OpenCart a lot of people recommend it because of its ease of use and its quick speed, but sometimes complains because of its limited categories (300-500 till lag I think). For Magento, I read about numerous complaints about the un-ease of use, so I crossed that out right away.

That left me with OpenCart and PrestaShop too. Anyone have had any experiences with them as well?

I'd go with OpenCart over Prestashop.... The system is flexible and if you are a programmer / coder, creating your own code into the system is neat and easy....

Prestashop is good, opencart has less features but user interface is good.

I've used both and opencart was best by far - the code in prestashop is rather out-dated and messy, and it can be a bit 'tetchy' at times, where as opencart is bang up to date and very clean - the code is beautiful to work with.
I know prestashop gets more publicity - they really push that, but while prestashop is busy having conferences and events and such, opencart is quietly getting on with the job - and winning !

I've tried neither. Though i have tried shopcreator.com which is no good if your planning on editing the script. If you'd want my opinion i would have to say go with opencart of have anouther quick look around for what else is on offer.

shopcreator.com is not a free service - they like to plaster FREE FREE FREE all over the place, but it ain't so - there's a monthly fee for the pro versions, and for the 'free' version they take a percentage of your turnover (as if !). Also - god help you if you ever decide to leave and go somewhere else - basically you'll be starting again from scratch.
