Social Networks VS Personal Information Nightmare

The use of Social Networking websites has become a thinkg of the present and the future. Everyone seems to be using them for staying in touch with friends/family or for marketing something that they have been working on.

The only issue with Social Networking websites is that they tend to ask you for a fair amount of personal information in order for you to register and this personal information tends to be made public once you have completed the registration.

Most of the Social Networking websites tend to have some form of privacy setting which allows you to hide such personal information from people whom are not your “friends” which will make the users of such Social Networking websites feel a little more at ease.

Their are various issues with this though. Not everyone will notice that these “extra” settings exist and that their personal information is available to the world to view, use and share as “they see fit”.

Even those whom are wiser than most and make sure that such privacy settings are correctly configured so that only certain people can see their personal information may still be fooled into sharing their personal information online by a “friend” request which gets accepted.

Once you have allowed that person to become a part of your “network” it means that they have the rights to look at your personal information because you have granted them access to do so.

The best advice to give here would be to use common sense and to be sure that the person who is asking to be your friend online is actually someone you know because once your information has been accessed anyone can attempt to use it for their means if they were to deem that “a good idea”.

The point is that you should do your best to make sure that who are within your friends list are people you know and to limit the amount of personal information that you are providing on such websites.
