You can create ego search feeds, so that you know when your name/product is mentioned online. You can then respond when appropriate.
Reputation is managed by you! If you provide a good service and are responsible with your clients you should maintain a positive reputation, there is no trick to it. Being realistic is almost impossible to satisfy 100% of your customers, even the biggest best brands can not satisfy everybody so they use Online Reputation Management that basically is a strategy to "own" the top 10/20 results for your brand name in the search engines. The simplest ways are to create social media accounts, blogs and domains with your Brand Name and optimize them just enough so they don't outrank your primary site but outrank any negative comment that could be found in the search engines. its right that there's no trick to it. its just knowing what reputation management is actually before posting any presumed intelligence. @ OP, reputation management is actually tracking and finding what is being discussed about your site and where so that you can respond. this way you manage your site's reputation and can promote public relation. there are some reputation management tools out there where some are free but most are paid. i'm yet to see a good reputation management tool that is free. you can have a setup where anytime someone posts something about your site anywhere on the web, you will be notified. you also can setup google alert with your site name or domain URL to get notifications. one issue with google alert is that it sends out lot if irrelevant notifications.
I will now tell you exactly how to keep a very good reputation online. Do not invest emotionally in your customers. Also be willing to lose money in order to keep people happy. Be humble in the face to dissatisfaction even though it may in truth really piss you off, just let it go, say your sorry and give a refund if that makes them happy. Nothing will wreck your reputation quicker then being petty and never ever being willing to lose even one penny. The bottom line..... never give anyone a reson to write anything bad about you online. I own an internet service and yes I lose money some times on people who are difficult and who go online with total junk computers who then try and blame me when their internet runs badly. I make sure they see I really try to help them. Then If I can't I send them to someone who can. Even when some one does not pay and I have to go after them I always offer to wave past due fees etc just to make it more easy for them to pay. It works and often they pay up and thank me. Just don't let business get under your skin and make you mad. Just take the attitude that it is just human nature and do not ever let it ruin your day. In the end no one will have anything bad to say about you as you stay in control and defuse every situation to your advantage keeping total control of your reputation at all times. In the end it pays you back to lose some times just to keep people happy and saying good things about you. ###
