I think you can get projects from odesk or other freelancer websites but you have to bid for them. There is huge competition from other users.
I am using both Odesk & Elance and I personally feel Elance to be very simple and trustworthy. They have excellent dispute management team who takes care of deceivers. Elance has time and fixed jobs. Of course any online freelance sites are competitive with competitors across the globe but the best always win.
