    Hi All,

I'm in the process of creating a website and I have come across a problem regarding copyright. The problem is I wanted to use content from other websites (text and graphics) and my naivety thought I could do this as long as I posted the original link or source at the bottom. As you are all probably aware this is not acceptable as I need to contact the originator / author of the content and ask for their permission before it is possible to use their website content.

    My idea...

Would I be allowed to have a link to a website that when clicked it opens up a flash window displaying a preview of the website.

I will not be hosting any information on my site apart from the website link that can be viewed in a preview window when clicked.

I would appreciate any feedback anyone can give.

    Thank you in advance
    Nick

If what you're asking is are you allowed to link to other websites without a copyright problem, the answer is yes. The issues come in with deep linking (skipping their front pages) or embedding the content on your pages. As long as that's what you're doing, you should be fine.

    Hi Deena

    Thank you for you reply.

So linking to the front page is OK, what about if I display a preview of their front page on my site? For example if someone clicks on a website link on my website and instead of going to the linked website a preview box pops up with their front page.

If you go to this website. www.huddletogether.com/projects/lightbox/

and click on an image, a preview of a larger image appears. I want to apply this same method to websites, when people click on a website link on my page a preview of their website pops up.

All I wonder is how the copyright law sees this.

    Thank you in advance

    Nick

Truly, I don't think it's been tested yet. My initial gut reaction is that it shouldn't be a problem. I'm basing this on browsers that I've seen that show thumbnails of the site that they're linking to...

    Hope that helps.
