My suggestion would be to tell your friend to get involved in online marketing communities such as this one. Start learning. I don't think you have to spend a lot of time here, there is a lot of value and learning you will do naturally when you go out and do it yourself. If he wants to get moving though, head on over to Commission Junction or Amazon and apply to become an affiliate. Start in affiliate marketing, it doesn't take a lot of resources to get moving, and there is plenty of information out there that will help you along the way.
First do SEO (on-page seo first and then off-page seo). If you have a budget for advertising through cpc, cpm networks like google adwords, adbrite, facebook etc. then go with it or else you need to keep your best efforts to make your business in good standing.

He can start off with PPC advertising if he promotes his own products. If he has a lower budget then he should go the SEO route, but it'll take a bit longer to get going.
By doing some promotion is to some advertising network you'll get a drastically customer and traffic especially with CPM
