One Reason Why People Click On Adsense Ads

I posted this on my blog and there were some very good feedback so I thought I'd share it here as well.

One of my sites, www.OnlineTypist.com, is so painfully boring, it's embarassing. But you know what? It gets an incredible number of Adsense clicks! An unbelieveable CTR.

Then I realized why. People are lazy. ;)

When I see a page like the homepage of OnlineTypist.com, my eyes glaze over. There are just too many words. Oh, I'm sure the content is very useful if I take the time to read it. But most people don't. :p

When they encounter a page like this, their finger on the mouse is itching to click away, to see something different, something more exciting. And one of the "comfortable" things to do is click on one of those familiar little blue links.

You can read more about what I wrote in my blog if you're interested.

I have not seen anyone teach this "trick" about improving Adsense clicks. If this is old news to you, good for you.

If this is something new to you, give it a go. Try experimenting with one or two of your own sites and see if it makes a difference to your Adsense earnings.

Go ahead, make your site boring! :D

I totally agree. I have a boring site that I have not touched for over 12 months. (literally) It constantly makes 6-20 dollars per day. I really believe it is because visitors get bored with the content and look for somewhere else to go. I've had colleges tell me to develop the site more. But I really believe that it being boring is it's magic. I'm literally scared to touch it.

You know, this is very very true. I have a site which I rarely attend to, and it makes me the bulk of my earnings wheras a site thats so damn popular, earns only a fraction less. This is weird..

So CTR is directly proportional to how boring a site is. That's kind of sad. ;)

I agree entirely. I also have a site where the content has not been updated for several months. It also appears in the top 10 to 20 SERPS for most keywords relevant to the site's topic and it does very well I assume for the reasons mentioned.

I'll bear in mind in future to make my websites as mind-numbingly boring as possible (unless they already are, and I suspect some might think that). It's an interesting take on the subject and one that just might be right, but are the GoogleAds that appear not equally as boring?

I agree to a certain extent with your analysis. You have to trade it off against not getting repeat visitors though.

Oh, this has been talked about before, although more in reference to "ugly" sites versus "boring" sites (see my posting The Ugly Single-Page Site). But they're very similar.

Actually, I don't think your site is "boring", really, it's probably more that it's "overwhelming", i.e. so much information that it scares the visitors :)

I suppose it also depends on what kind of content you have, if it is something like OnlineTypist then it's going to attract the kind of audience who click on adsense ads. I may have to try this trick in the future!

Congratulations on your mind-numbingly boring website!

Thats one of the reasons why I am thinking about breaking down my articles for a new site to no more than 200 words a page. I will do this by segmenting the articles into different parts, so each part will be no more than about 200 words. I am hoping it will be easier for people to digest. I know it may result in fewwer clicks but I want to creates ites that will ultimately help people and hopefuully profit from it as well.

    Great point, Notting.

I think there is a happy medium somewhere. But, ultimately, I think you need to look at the site's well-being and think about other methods of advertising when developing the site. In fact, maybe you should not think about advertising at all when develping a site.

There are also some people who make damn crappy looking sites and yet do not get many clicks; I think a lot depends on the niche and, frankly, how relevant the ads are.

True, but this is if you dont want the visitor to come back to your site. I am more about getting them to my site and having them come back often and click and buy things. Great though if that is your goal or you have cheap traffic you just want to monetize.
