My question is whether search engine optimisation and submission is more important or one way or two way links/ directory posting is important to get good ranking in google/yahoo. Thanks for your comments.
Its all important. Linking is just part of SE Optimization. Design high quality unique content sites... submit them for back links, do social bookmarking and request some link exchanges. The higher the quality of content the more natural links you will get. There is no ONE thing you can do to improve your SERPs.
If your talking about Off Page factors, building OneWay links from quality related sites is the best thing to do....

Lets start one by one 1) Search engine optimization is mandatory for any one who wants to get good serp position 2) Search engine submission is important but only one time. If you submit your site now and then it is totally useless and will ban you. And listen only submit your site one time to google then automatically all search engine will add you. 3) one way link is better than two way link. Two way links are not given more importance in the eye of google yes other search engine may give importance by about google not much important. 4) Directory submission is always good but that too one way.
