I have a domain, i.e. abcde.com . All the content is about a USA made product, I register it and use my friend's address in USA ( used in the admin, billing, technical,Registrant contact in whois) Then I host it under a USA server. Then I start link building, I get many links from various site from .com.sg (Singapore website) . Then it is an interesting found : I get my website (i.e. abcde.com) listed in top 10 in Yahoo.com.sg, BUT not appear in Yahoo.com at all. It seems that Yahoo has the algo : if you get many backlinks from the same country (in this example, Singapore) , then your website could be geting higher ranking in the country regional search engine. (yahoo.com.sg) MY website is nothing mention about Singapore, and the whois contact is all from USA, and the hosting and domain is from USA too, still the website rank on top in yahoo.com.sg So I think this is one of the Algo of Yahoo Anybody come accross this before ?
Interesting. But maybe yahoo.com has not updated their index yet. Have you searched on others regional Yahoos ?
Hummm! I have a domain registered with my USA address Server is in Italy I have few links from italian sites and several hundreds from USA I rank 5th to 9th in USA and 1st or 2nd in Italy for my main keywords. Your statement doesn't make sense to me. Guido
Well, that's probably because that keywords are less competitive on Italian market than on USA market.
That's could be a factor, but some keywords are related to Italy as well, and should have same weight on both market.
Thanks for the info. I think Yahoo algorithm for country regional search engine is still the same. Quality and unique content and meta tags title is still important for Yahoo. It is nice to hear that if you get many backlinks from the same country, then it is the chance of geting higher ranking in the country regional search engine.
yes,i have simmilar situation, where are the backlinks from affect the ranks in differet contries.MSN is same!
Guiddy, your example shall not compare with mine. my domain name, DNS, server, content, whois contact and keywords I search "dog food manufacturer" all are USA base. Most of my links are from Singapore websites. What I don't understand is how my website is ranked on top in Yahoo.com.sg, but not appear in Yahoo.com at all. Your example, the server is in Italy, and according to my experiencs/prove of my other websites, local hosting play an important role in regional search engines. That's why your website ranked high in Italy. However, if you want to do experiment, You may try to switch your hosting from Italy to USA, and make sure you content not mentioned Italy, and make sure your whois information also not in Italy, your keywords not mentioned Itali. Then wait 3-4 weeks and see, whether your linking in Italiy will drop or not. I just try to find out how the Yahoo algo works, experiement makes perfect. no offense, Guiddy !
I''m not offended at all ... I'm not an expert so i was just putting my two cents. I think it's quite normal that if most of your links are from a certain country, your site would rank better in that country. for example, i could be an italian factory that sell refrigerators in central africa: I suppose if people says: "guido sells refrigerators in our country, here is the link" even if my product is made in italy i think i'd rank better in africa rather than in italy. And also, it could be a matter of keyword competition as someone stated in this thread. But still it's just my very humble opinion. Guido
quite interesting discussion. As I know 1. Geo specific backlinks can change ranking in search engine. Because as we know backlinks also give some trust factor or you can say Vote. 2. Hosting is also important one. if you having some specific country website then hosting should be from that region.
Should imagine it's part of a wider geo marketing algo, but I agree with the comment above, competition for all keywords is high, even geo names.
