I have unrelated sites along with related sites in my site as a result of link exchange.After reading some blogs about the importance of "relevancy" in link exchange I decided to pick only related sites in my next link addition process.My question is ,is it harmful or violating google guidelines if I won't remove that unrelated links from my site?Please advice me?
it is not harmful, nor does it violate any rules. if if did then webmasters could bring down their competitors by linking to them from un-relevant sites! in this case, the quality of links are not high from search engines point of view, nothing else
Have to agree that link exchanges are out of date. Relevancy is a relatively new strategy for google where you will get extra credit if the backlink is from a relative source. However you cant get any bad effects from have crap backlinks (otherwise everyone would just create bad backlinks for their competetors sites!)
Link exchange may be a old technique but still it helps you in increase the back links and also provide high traffic to your website so plz do remmeber old is gold
i don't know clearly. but Google always says that your site should be linked with the related sites only. this helps the visitors to get more information. so i think it can be harmful for your site. thanks

Link exchanges today are a joke and I would not waste any time on them at all. In fact I would get rid of all your link exchanges and tell the other sites sorry I am off to better one way direct link building. Just my opinion, and probably will save you a lot of time since a link exchange is the weakest a links, and if you are linking to non related sites Google will drop them from the link graph, out of GWT, but will not penalize your site.
