So infra red is invisible to the eye as well as some other colours on the spectrum. What would happen if you were to crank it up to the max? Would it damage your eyes? Eg a very powerful infra red light.

Pubs are bad places for intellectual arguments...

If I remember correctly, infrared light is hot... So you would cook yourself, along with damaging your eyes!

Yea, the damage infrared would do is to burn your eyes if you really focus the light. But then any kind of electromagnetic radiation can heat the surfaces that absorb and re-emit them. Only 50% of the heating on earth by sun is due to infrared. Rest is due to visible light.

it works the same as lasik, or laser eye correction surgery. they shoot a hot beam of light to burn your retina to correct the placements and your vision. if they mess up you can go blind.

Generally eye damage due to infrared light only comes after long-term exposure. Pretty much the only people who have to worry about this are those who work in blast furnaces. You would have to have a really powerful source of IR to cause immediate damage. It's not nearly as damaging as UV radiation.

There's no reason to stop debating in bars. The answers to some of our most challenging questions will one day be found at the bottom of an empty mug.

if there wasn't barroom talks we wouldn't have the guiness book of world records, so named over an argument involving a pint of guiness.
