I've created a blog and a couple of sites that making pretty decent cashflow already so I'm happy about that. I'm contemplating the next move however... I've got a few other topics that I'd like to blog about and I'm thinking if I should create multiple 'specialist' blogs (like a 'tech' blog, etc), or if I should just create a personal blog with my different interests as different parts or categories of the blog.I understand the SEO advantages to having a site that focused on one topic, but because most of the things I put will be based on my opinions and I prefer to take things as they come as opposed to simply focusing on one topic at a time, I feel that operating multiple blogs will be a little troublesome. It helps that should focus SEO on individual posts anyway. Would like to hear about your opinions
It seems that your gut instinct is telling you to go with one. If you're already making cash-flow from your other sites and blogs, just let people know about your new one. If they already like you, they'll follow you to your new home. That's my opinion, anyway.
Google likes sites that focus on one subject, providing a lot of information for it. That is one of the reasons that you can see a low PR micro-niche site, with comparatively low backlinks, outranking informational mega sites like About.com. Having a real focus to a site with sibling pages that have highly relevant content seems to make Google happy. Aside from having a better chance at ranking well across the board by going with separate sites for each topic, you also have the opportunity to sell them off if you decide you don't want to manage them all at some point. With focused sites, you will also be able to get away with smaller amounts of content on a regular basis to maintain the same types of rankings that you would if you were sticking it all on one site. Simply put, while multiple sites might seem like more work in theory, you should end up with less work done to achieve the same results. Since they rank easier and have less of a content update requirement to achieve and maintain certain rankings, you end up with less time spent for the results you want than if you worked to get the same results with a single site.
