I have tried to maintain over 50 sites at one time and for me it just didn't work out. I couldn't seem to find the time to update them, much less work on link building for that many sites. I ended up starting completely over and am managing just 1 large site now + a blog which seems to be working out better for myself.
OK, so you bring up cats as an example. It so happens someone has already done that: http://www.ragdollcatguide.com/ http://www.siamesecatguide.com/ http://www.persiancatguide.com/ A quick analysis reveals that this person's sites are competitive in categories where there isn't much competition. For "ragdoll," the site is in the No. 1 spot. But for "persian" the site checks in at No. 39. The strategy brings some traffic and income from AdSense, and it's probably steady. But traffic and revenue from all the sites put together cannot possibly come close to that from one comprehensive site that competes well in the niche. Conclusion: Little sites are OK if all you want is pocket money, but if you're serious and you want to make some real money, ALWAYS go for the megasite. And never try to boost your megasite by spinning off content into little sub-sites. Keep it all under one roof.
Did ya bother to check the sites that are not ranking well in serps for backlinks?.... yea they dont exist (persian has like 200 siamese has 300 in yahoo) evidently not many results for ragdoll so it naturally rose to the top If these where mine they would be on the first pages for there terms as in most cases its less then 5 million results then they would become authority sites.. Like i said ill humbly disagree with the general crowd as i dont believe in placing all my eggs in 1 basket. And if 1 site does better then the rest i would place more effort on it Pocket money? depends on how your monetizing your site i suppose but in the long run do you think you have the skills to take your MEGA site to the top page for CATS... 135,000,000 Million Im thinking this question is like.... which do you like better a Cat or Dog (one of personal opinion) But hey to each his own... thx malcolm
IMHO, i really think that one big website get's aged and trusted will rank better than a couple of mini websites network and you should consider not to crosslink your mini network heavily, unless you have a public IP address for each of them
Son, I said "quick analysis," remember? Why would anyone need to dig, anyway? It's pretty obvious the site owner processed each mini-site the same way, and it's also pretty obvious that ragdolls are less popular than persians. What you conclude from that is that to rank well for persians you need quite a lot of effort - is it worth the time for a mini-site? If you are working that hard, you might as well go for a big site. Are you sure? In the above example, you would be putting more effort into ragdoll, even though the mini-site already ranks at 1 and the niche is pretty narrow. Of course, and I'd be delighted to teach you if you had a site on cats and came to us for advice. Anyway, as you say, to each his own. I will concede that there is one major advantage to making lots of little sites, namely you won't be affected as much by a Google penalty on any particular site. (But then again, you won't be making much in the first place.)
ahhhh im starting to hate having to go fix something in my past post then it duplicates same thread... sorry bout that...
Well "Dad" (in 38 therefor im not your son) but i did read that you just quickly glanced at it and sorry if you took offense to my opening sentence as it wasnt ment to be insulting but the way i speak. I dont do MINI sites but meant sites that have a decent amount of pages (15+ on any given niche) or regular sites with unique templates and good amount of pages (not made for adsence sites or affiliate sites with a couple pages just for profit) No... what i said or ment was to get higher in any serps a site needs backlinks (sorry if i wasnt clear) Rag doll is very scarce term as shown by search results which is why it has climbed to the top easily.. (plus the domain keywords helped the cause) I appreciate the help but im just fine taking sites where they need to be in the serps in any niche. (but thx for offering) Well atleast we agree making money online isnt hard in any niche whether mini or mega providing the site is well monetized with decent traffic and just not adsence on it Ok friend im done for today as i need to get to the gym as i didnt go yesterday ...peace. thx malcolm
depends on the fact if you can attract more viewer with one site or with like 10 sites that are more specific.
1 big website is always good. becaz no need to promote all high traffic(people go to max. section) site will be populor soon. max earning due to high traffic. etc. etc. so i will go with 1 site.
Depends on the time and work you are willing to put in your websites, if you planing to have rezults faster i would suggest to work on maintaining 2-3 websites. If you want BIG traffic you will work harder on 1 website because you will have a much competitive keyword that you will probably promote.
Absolutely, one big website. Basically, bigger traffic can attract better advertisers. And should be easier to maintain. But, in SERP building, lots of small sites can be also very usefull, in network concept.
It really depends on what you are trying to do. Over time one big site can make you a TON of money if you work on it hard enough and dedicate yourself to the project. Over time a bunch of little sites can make you money as well, but can you dedicate the time to work on them all and improve them?
Well said, although if its your first website, don't and create 10 mini websites because you wont be able to handle all of them.
big ideally, always go for big. Small sites become cumbersome and hard to manage for such little profit. If you have a site that's not growing, it's always best to get rid of it, and focus on your other sites that are doing well. By cutting off the fat you can concentrate on the sites that are doing well, rather then wasting time trying to work both, and denying a legitimately good prospect more time to build it up.
I don't use my websites now, Still I dominate google and own multiple spots on google page 1. I am the best
