Hey, So i'm new to SEO obviously since i'm asking this question. For max ROI and visitors have you guys found that targeting one keyword at a time and being really well ranked for that keyword then moving on it better or is targeting all of your keywords at the same time better? It is easier to focus on one at a time?
In my opinion, it's easier to target one keyword. Once you rank well for that keyword, you could expand your website to other keywords.
I disagree. I think it is easier to target multiple keywords at once. By doing this, you will get some rankings for the less competitive keywords first. When you target multiple keywords at once, it is much easier to vary your link anchor text and it looks more natural. When you target just one keyword at a time, you have to be careful that you do not get too many links using that one link anchor text, otherwise you could get penalized. This is because it looks spammy to have a very high percentage of your links using one specific phrase as anchor text. Naturally there would be some variation. I would start with 3 or 4 keyword phrases that preferably have some overlapping words and that have a variety of competition level. Once you rank on the first page for those keywords, move on to more overlapping phrases. This way you will be improving rankings for many keywords at once.
Well it depends what kind of site you have, the authority of your site and the current niche you're in. But I say the more keywords you target the better because targeting more keywords will equal more traffic.
You should target as many keywords as you can. You can never be sure which keywords will pop first and you don't want to put all your effort into one phrase and not get any results for several months. I would suggest coming up with the top 10 phrases you believe are important based upon proper keyword research and then start to target those through content and link building. Check out more at our TrafficVault website. Hope that helps.
I think it's important to prioritize. If you try to do too much at once your efforts will be spread too thin. Do a keyword analysis and find some keywords that have good search volume, then find out where you rank for them. Pick some keywords where you rank on the second or third page of Google and work on those first. Maybe throw in one competitive phrase that you don't rank at all for. Re-evaluate periodically and set aside those where you've reached #1 and add in a few new ones.
Hey thanks for all your input. It seems that DP is a little divided on this some saying that it is important to diversify early while others not so much. Currently i am working on 2 main keywords, i believe that these will drive very targeted traffic to my site. I can understand the fear that without diversifying early you are not doing enough market research to see if your efforts could be used better on another keyword. I am going to expand the keywords i am optimizing for now, only slightly and see what is working. How long should i expect visible results in? Trafficvault: This was very helpful thanks.
It's not a question of how much keywords you should target, it's a question of how competitive is the niche you are in. Then, define "multiple keywords". Do you mean by that to target "phrases" that will be a lot less competitive or target different short keywords more or less related? There is no good way of doing it. If you are trying to target the keyword "finance" then I would advise you to target less competitive key phrases containing multiple keywords, but still related to finance. That could look like "refinance my home in 2009". This is just an example, you get the idea I'm sure. Otherwise, if you're not in a competitive niche, targeting a single keyword might do it. It all depends on the competition.
whatever just use long tail targeted keywords for ur website. also if u r targeting on a specific region use some thing like I have done in my signature.
One word at a time and do not choose the highly competitive keyword. It is alway wise to choose the long tail word at the very beginning.
