Title tags (Content) are located in the section of each HTML page and are used to give the document a name, or title.

Accurate and descriptive title tags are a crucial part of on-site search engine optimization (SEO). The content in these tags are displayed in search results as the link to your website, and they provide keyword information to search engines to assist with ranking your pages. In this article, we cover some of the basic do's and don'ts for the page titles on your website.

Do use tags that accurately describe the content of the page. For instance, if you own a website about dog bones, and a particular page contains organic pink dog bones, the tag should contain a phrase like "Android pink mini netbooks" or "Purchase Android pink mini netbooks for your girlfriend". While the page does contain netbooks, simply putting "netbooks" as the title will not help customers find what they are looking for or the search engines rank it properly.

Do not fill your title tags with spam! Search engines hate spam, so if you type keywords into your tags over and over, use them in the description in the page repeatedly, and fill the page with them, search engines will view that page as spam and rank it lower. Use the keyword you are targeting only once in the title tag, and make sure it will look good to the user coming from a search engine.

Keep your title tags short and to the point. Anything more than 140 characters is too long and messy. Unless you are spamming your keywords in the title tag (which you should not do!), it should be easy to stay under this limit.

Do not use the same title tag for every page on your site. Not only is this confusing for search engines, it is confusing for users as well. Each page should have its own unique title tag, and that tag should tell the user what is contained on the page. Websites designed using WYSIWYG (what you see is what you get) HTML editors often fall prey to this mistake.

These tags were created to help name pages and assist users in finding the content that they are looking for. As with any other aspect of on-site SEO, making the pages more user friendly will be noticed by the search engines and your website rank will be improved accordingly.
