First step check out the contents and speed of website then go for on page techniques like title, meta tag, sitemap , robots.txt file. to check out the websites heaths as well as errors.
Different title and description for EVERY page of your website (if possible and if you have time!) H1 for your main keyword (no more than 1-2 times per page!) H2 for your secondary keywords (no more than 3!) Relevant ALT tag for images (don't add your main or secondary keywords, just try to make a quick description of the image and add a PART of your keyword!) Good title tags for links (again don't use your main keyword!)
There are certainly lots of on-page aspects being mentioned here, but what is missing is how to use them properly. Misuse will kill a site! Remeber that Google is for the user, so make sure your site is as well. Make your optimized content for the reader, as well as googlebot.
I accept all the replies above mentioned.. However, i personally believe that, we should check how these factors are performing!!! Check the rankings of the website & how the backlinks it earned.... Is there any reasons, the meta tags influenced to get rank higher ??? Or its becoz of the onpage changes!!!
