On-page is the step to get traffic to your site ..so be careful to choose the keywords because if your keyword are effective then website get high rank easily ....
so'firstly choose the best niche related keywords .for this you can use the tool like Google keyword tool .these keywords should be at low completion and high global and monthly searches . keywords should has been high keyword proximity and low keyword stuffing .After choosing a keywords, make effective and unique meta description and meta tags .be sure always your website has XML site map and robot.txt file because without these crawlers can not be crawl you site and has not indexed in search engine .so make site and robot file for your site ......after all this submit your site in Google analytic and Google webmaster for indexing to your site . change description after interval of time so that your site has always good and unique submission .

start with the keyword research first and then competitor analysis. once you done both of these tasks then just have a look at webmaster guidelines, and then start on-page optimization

Great Reply dear, Could you please clarify two things : One is what will be standard Robots.txt for my wordpress site and another is what do you mean by "change description after interval of time" It will be great pleasure of mine if you reply.

    Thanks
    Ramkrishna

    Hi Ramkrishna,
Robot.txt file is for Google crawlers .it all depends to use that you want to allow or disallow to Google crawlers to crawl your site ....you can make it like this ....
To exclude all robots from the entire server

    User-agent: *
    Disallow: /

To allow all robots complete access

    User-agent: *
    Disallow:

and change description means : your site has one standard description .but when you submit
your website for back links then you change description day by day .so that no duplicacy in this
and fresh content has lot of preference .

basically you need to have these things setup

    a. friendly url
    b. sitemap.xml
    c. good and relevant different titles and meta description and keywords
    d. Social sharing buttons ( it is may not a seo factor but it is very important )
    e.robots.txt
The most important thing is absolutely unique content with articles as large as possible (below 1000 words)

Don't over optimize it. Put the keyword in the title, description and H1, H2 tags.

After all you don't need a paid plugin, just follow the simple SEO rules that you find on seomoz and other reputed websites regarding on-page optimization, here is a great article http://yoast.com/articles/wordpress-seo/
