On Google page 1 and still No Traffic

    Hey everyone,

    I have a problem here.

We have a site which features on page one of googles search on our three main keywords as well as about 7-8 variations of keyphrases (all the ones 'suggested' by google toolbar).

Now sometimes, very seldom, they slip to page 2, but mostly stay on page one.

Now most people would say that his is a very good thing, however we only get 40-50 uniques a day.

The site has been up since 2002 and I have just put up adsense about 2 weeks ago to see if we can monetise on that in any way. We've made about U$7 in those 2 weeks.

Now as for SEO I guess we are ok, so what else would be holding the traffic down.

The site is a gallery of african tribal masks so I'ts no PS3 site but the theme is very popular outside africa, especially with the USA.

Any ideas what could be holding our traffic back?

Hmmm well most poeple say the front page isnt good enough, you have to be in the top five, although I dont really agree with that.

Anyway use a keyword tracker tool such as http://www.digitalpoint.com/tools/suggestion/?keywords

then look at the months search and divide by days in a month, then this will give you a rough estimate of what traffic you should recieving.

If there isnt alot, my advice would be to make your specific niche, the best of its kind, offer better information, or provide something different from the other sites, therefore you will get returning traffic.

    Ash :)

Thats a nice tool there, might use it myself, neede one like that.

BTW, your problem: I for example get nearly no traffic on my main page but on one of my inner pages (http://www.giovanni.xenweb.net/Computer Forumz Magazine.htm) Where our monthly magazine is located - I get tonnes of visitors.

It depends on your keywords but I found with some sites that are in top3 on Google for some keyphrases that apparently had many searches, that they don't receive more then 8 visitors/day from that keyphrases.

Or, some times I found to receive more visitors from keyphrases with less searches then the ones with more searches.

I would be very happy to give you that answer but I don't have it, maybe some more advanced tools would do but I never use anything else but wordtracker.

"we are on page 1 for the top 3 from word tracker and the top 2 from overture."

Can you tell us the numbers that wordtracker gave you for this terms ?

the numbers were anywhere from 200-800 searches a day .... once again not a big number ... but I wouldn't mind getting a good deal of even those searches :)

Seems it is simply not that attractive a term. Keeping building it/ maintaining rankings and start researching new term targets IMO

Keep that one 'in the basket' and starting hunting down some new ones.

perhaps you title tag and description are not that eye-catching so you are missing most of the searches.

    just a thought.

great stuff gypsy, I'll have a look at the links however I think my problem will be with which search engine picks up which keywords. But I think I'll keep concentrating on goooogle.

6,000-24,000 searches per monthly is moderating competitive. I guess it just depends. I bounce between #4 - #6 on google for a keyphrase with approx. 18,000 searches per month and I am lucky to get maybe 8 referrals a day from it. So, I understand where you are coming from. Hang in there. :)

    Two questions?
    1) Does your page have a good description tag? In other words: does the description that shows up tell people: this is the link I need? If so, get yourself a good description in the description tag and if necessary block the ODP-description.

    2) The pages that outrank you - how good are they? Are they of the type that will answer the searchers questions directly? If so, sorry to say, you are probably screwed - without major rewriting/adding relevant content etc. Of course for niche keyword-phrases related to that first term you may still do quite well.

there is also a possibility a tracker tool not to give always the true results..

that has happened to me a few times. So even if you are in the 1st page you have few visitors..

besides check if your site has high ranks for the targeted keyword in all the google servers

dear you have to optimize your sites according to the keywords reach, make you url also according to the keywords. you are in first page but not getting high traffic over that  because mostly visitors click on first three or four sites, so promote your sites up to  that level and also linked your sites over the social media sites. you have also make interesting information in your sites so visitors will have remain longer as they can.

First of all i will suggest you to set up Google webmaster tool for your website. Check out your website impression over there. Then you will find whether people are really interested in searching with those keywords which you think will work for you.

I am definitely sure that you are not having huge impressions as you are thinking of.
