Old site with a new suject and keywords. Any suggestions?

I have my very first website which coincidentally is the name of my business. Back in the day I used it for a general article hub. Basically just hosting articles that I wrote to sell affiliate products. It is currently ranking for terms like "rss feeds" "six pack abs" etc...

However now I want to make it more about my business which has nothing to do with what is currently on there. I am actually looking to get it ranked for terms like "website design" and "online business consultation"

    So my question(s) is this.....

Should I take all the old content down? or should I just take the links off the first page and leave the old content up? How will this effect trying to rank for new keywords?

Thanks in advance for your incite on this query.

Well I want to use this domain since it is the name of my business. Would it be better than to just take down all of the old content?

The stuff that is currently on there is only responsible for like $200 a year. So I would not really miss it.

If you want to keep the same domain name, you might take down the old content. If you have loads of links pointing to your site, do a 301 redirect and point the links to your main site. Since the topic of your site has changed, your will have unrelated links, but then again, its better than not having any.

If your domain name is old, you will also boost a little bit in rankings just because of the age. For two years ago I did similar to what you are thinking about doing now. I kept the same domain name, and deleted the content, and within one month, my site was ranking for the new keywords again.

would it be better if you put all the files in a subdomain and have a pointer to the old info? I'm still new at this

I would keep th old content that you rank for and just not include it on the new menue. If you rank for those keywords you are making some income. It is like a developed piece of real esate. Do not tear it down just add to it.

The problem is if the old content on the site, as I understood it is all about affiliate marketing etc.... Now the owner is going to offer design services etc.... Would you have done business with a person that had a lot of affiliate offers and offering design services???

I get what you are saying.

If he takes it off the menu no one will be able to find it except for the search engines. He can do what he wishes. If the old pages produce income why would he want them de indexed? I would still just take them off the menu and remove internal linking to keep people looking for web design services away from them. That just my .02.

That is essentially what I was thinking about doing and the way I currently have it. The old content is all original content written by me about and advertising products related to all different industries "health, technology, etc..."

    Thanks for everybody's input.
