Old site/domain with complete new content, should I be worried?

    Hi,

I have got a domain name which is about a year old. The domain name itself is generic and can be used pretty much for any niche. Currently I have a website set up for that domain name however this doesn't give me nothing other than the top rankings for the generic word in Google which to me is useless. I have not built any links to it yet and there's no real links linking to it other than some whois-links or whatever.

My plan is to open up a new website with complete different content than what the domain/website currently has. The reason why I want to use this domain is that it has some age and it's cheaper than buying domains when I maybe don't need them.

My worries are that this new site with the old domain name may not preform well in Google as it has for about a year been fed with content which has no connection with what the new site will be about. Do you think this is a problem and would you have gone with an other domain name?

    Thanks
