quick question here.I have been contacted by someone about buying a directory from them. The domain is pr5 and is about 7 years old.But the wayback machine shows it was a web design coding site before, not a directory.None of the sub cats have pr.Would this be worth looking to invest in?

It might. All depends on price, and where the backlinks are coming from and the anchor text....

Even then it still may be worth it. I converted a site to a directory that was used for a Latin American organization (don't really know what it was) where the former site was all in spanish.

All of the backlinks used the domain name, so I just used the domain name as the site name. It held its PR, and is gaining inner PR consistently. (the domain cost about $30, so it was a little experiment).
