And would you like to build your own website? If the old domain is suitable for your website, you can still use the
old one.The precondition is that the old one is still owned by you and not registered by others again for the
expiration. If you think there is a more suitable one for your website,of course you'd better register a new one.
And try to make use of your old domain if you think it's still useful.Or give it up so that your money on it will not
    be wasted.

I would use the old one if the name is suitable for the website niche.

Domain name is very important when it comes to SEO. So better you consider the domain name which is suitable to your niche. If the old domain name is suitable, so no need to register the new one. But if you wish to stick to SEO and bring up the new website, the correct choice of domain name would really help you out to cover more diatance in less time. But if you are ready to pt lots of effort, then you n still go by your old domain name, as I have read that the search engine somewhere also considers the domain age while allocating the page rank. For example you an refer to my blog Internet Techies, it is having very different domain mane, not related to niche, but still it is god going!

Google determines site age from when it was first indexed by them. If your domain never had content or was never indexed, it is still a "new" domain in google's eyes. Domain (actually site) age is certainly an important factor in the google algorithm - but it is only one of many. Domain age has nothing to do with toolbar pagerank.

One year really is not that old. It might not make a lot of difference.

Aged domains can help with SEO but please make sure its relevant to your sites topic or else it will look 'spammy.'
