My PR0 site is ranking #3 of 1.8million for a KW phrase in MSN but like 500th in Google.

Is it time I start worrying about google penalizing my sites, or is this in any way normal behavior? Or is MSN unreliable?

What did your site rank in google before you joined the network?

    Very poorly. It's new.

I had a duplicate content question a while back when I transfered my blog and couldn't delete the copy on one server without deleting the other. (it's complicated but true).

    I'm still worried about that.

More to the point, did your site previously have a PR?

This is defianately normal and is a complaint of many. It is compunded by the fact that MSN reacts to new links so quickly. THis has widened the gap for Coop members as MSN returns great results very quickly but Google takes some time.

It took near 4 months for my Coop weight to be felt by Google but was it ever :D

    hehe cool. :)

Maybe I should just give G some time. I really wish G would let you know if you were being penalized...

If you show up when just entering your url, you aren't banned. As far as penalized, it is more filters than penalties. Right now there is a major filter for new sites for competetive words. Usually referred to as the "Sandbox"

    Agreed,
A ban is definitely not easy these days. I would also say there are different levels of bans including backlink analyzing, new site penalization, etc. It is all tough to put a finger on.

About Google and MSN, yes, msn is nice while google will make you sweat it. Give it 4 to 6 months and google will start respecting.

you did not say clearly about which URL / domain you have the drop in G SERPS ...
assuming it is the one you have in your signature

as published elsewhere before .. googlebot does get killed or confused sometimes by fatal errors in code - i have repeatedly witnessed such in sites who dropped far down the serps that this only was caused by a fatal error in html code

in your case you have such a fatal error in your meta tags !!

    see
    ...
    meta name="keywords content ...

there is the closing " missing for keywords - correctly is would be

    meta name="keywords" content ...
hence googlebot has had repeatedly difficulties in indexing such sites before.

a simple click on firefox web developer toolbar often helps instantly to see such fatal code errors
the result usually is as repeatedly observed a deep drop in SERPS

Same thing is happening with me. in MSN, for several keywords I am now ranking in the top ten, yet google doesn't even have me on their radar.

There is no issue of dup content, etc on my site. i hear it's normal, and i'll just ride it out.

damn, now im ranking #1 for another KW in MSN.

Google just has to be hating me. I fixed the problem, but the wierd thing was the meta information in the include file WAS correct. However, after processing it somehow came out wrong :?

oh well, hopefully G will forgive me

I agree. I have seen a 1-2 day turn around to get a new site listed with MSN. That is quick. Perhaps a bit too quick in some cases.

    David,

it takes an age to see higher results in Google. I've been Very high on MSN beta and now MSN and yet google has me 5 or 6 pages in.

    I don't worry about...time will tell?
