The only reason would be that phpBB is free and vBulletin is not.

phpBB - good for small or personal forums out of the box. needs major modifications to have the functionality of vbulletin. If modded heavily, is just as good (and better in some areas) than vb. Horrible out of the box for search engine friendlyness.

vbulletin - best out of the box forum software period. not free like phpBB though.

Well one thing that drove me to quit skinning for phpbb was all the darn style guidelines and the never ending security updates. Atleast with Vbulletin you do not have as many updates and it gets indexed pretty good without any mod and knowing you own a Vbulletin site is awesome in my mind.

There arent really any reasons to choose phpBB over vBulletin functionality, feature set, development, security, modifications or community wise. All of these vBulletin excels in, of course if you are looking for a free solution then phpBB really is your only option in this comparison.

Actually today I will stay with phpbb, because it is --- free.

I think, that many from us use at the beginning free scripts and when the will come, it is normal to invest in security and design.

    Thank you for your opinion.

For those of you who are using vBulletin did you purchase a lifetime license or did you decide to go with the yearly lease?

I've bought all of mine as well. Liked the product, never saw a reason to "rent" it.
