I do not think polygamy has anything to do with "female genital mutilation", at least in this case.

According to wiki: Polygamy is a form of marriage in which a person has more than one spouse at the same time, as opposed to monogamy in which a person has only one spouse at a time

Polygamy is illegal across the whole western world, although in most cases it is loosely enforced. Isn't it so?
Its good that France bans polygamy: this would definitely mean less uneducated women, the only kind that agrees to live in a polygamy.

How can you force people ? asking people to leave country for polygamy seems to be too much.

TBH I think polygamy shouldn't be illegal and that choice should be left to the people (and even women should be allowed multiple husbands if all parties agree).

I think that polygamy is unnatural for people - even animals don't practice it in their behavior!

France is heading down the path towards Islamophobia...its time for French Muslims to stand up and mobilise against this oppression.

I believe Pakistan will disintegrate and cease to exist within the next decade.

They just have too many problems that can't be solved.

Whether we are for or against polygamy, polygyny, polyamory, polyandry, or group marriage, it seems to me that we should unite behind the idea that this is not a proper area for government involvement.

Check your facts. Many animals practice polygamy. Humans practiced polygamy for most of our history. It is monogamy which is unnatural for people -- monogamy is a fairly recent invention for humans.

I dont think they oughta ban polygamy entirely. As they dont have the death penalty, they could at least reserve it as a sentence for heinous criminal offenses.

I guess in Nepal and a territory of India near Nepal polygamy for women is prevalent.

Can someone clarify the burka situation? I was on holiday, in a non-English speaking country when the story broke, so I had to gather the issue from the news pundits' body language :D

UKIP has a policy to ban the burka in public places which forbids all headwear anyway, such as motorcycle helmets, like banks and teaching in state schools. I for one don't see this as a problem. Is this similar to how the French government is to enforce a ban, or are they being silly by outlawing wearing such clothing down the street or in one's home?

On the polygamy issue: if I'm not mistaken it is already illegal in the West. I know such practice is illegal here in England. I really do not understand why the government should micromanage peoples' lives. If a group of people wish to organise such a marriage, why not? Who is anyone to say that they can't?

EDIT: Never mind, I found out for myself. From the Guardian:

    This is ridiculous.

    This is worse though:

    Can you say, nineteen eighty-four?

Funnily enouigh, I bought a balaclava the other day. I wonder if I should partake in a social experiment; carry out my daily life wearing it, see how far I get before being questioned/arrested. That'd make an interesting youtube clip. Shouldn't we all have the right to personal privacy in public? Innocent until proven guilty, right?
