Offsite SEO

We've taken over doing SEO and PPC management for an open source educational software company that's a bit tricky to work with because 1) their content management system requires a specialized programmer to make simple changes (like title tags), and 2) their target audience is super niche.

Does anyone have any recommendations for directories or other websites we can target to work on building up links for this company, since our efforts have to be relegated to mostly offpage SEO?

So your doing SEO for a company but you dont know good sources to get links? + You listed there site publicly that they are having SEO done? Perhaps you should remove the link from your post and then go to the link exchange section in DP and trade links or buy links from others here.

A good way to start looking for site to be listed is to look where your competition is getting its links. That always helped me in the past.

Just looking and copying what your competition does will only do so much, most of the time you will need to OUT DO them, not follow there steps. Some competitors may rank well but there sites are badly SEO'd, follow correct legit SEO techniques like explained in this forum and you will do much better.

    Definitely!
I used that only to get started in link building, once I made sure my site was optimised.

Usually, if you're getting most of the links that your top 3 or 5 competitors are getting, that brings you in front since they don't have the same ones.
After that you need to go further, that's sure :)

Software company SEO can be very competitive depending on the niche, But being that it is educational software if there software is hosted or goes on edu websites that use it add a Powered by LINKTEXT on it. Will generate organically a bunch of sweet edu links as they gain customers.

I really think you need to shoot at thematic links in addition to the normal links.

Try to buy your way out on a few occasions but the final goal must be to create link worthy page and bring in some innovation onto linking campaigns.

Since, these dudes are into software - you may want to check out software directories and stuff - that will easily get you a couple of thousand backlinks.

Article Marketing and Blog Posts will also be great ways to build links.
