Offer for a parked domain

I am looking to acquire the .net version of one of my employer's domains. It is owned by a guy who hasn't done anything in the year or two that he has owned it and has no plans to do anything with it. He has it listed on a site that lists domains for sale ranging from "Make an offer" to a few hundred dollars to a million dollars.

I'd like to offer him something in a range of $20 to 100 but I have no idea if he is looking for $20 or $2000. He knows it's a trademarked domain but I don't plan on bringing that up. I am thinking of mentioning that domain evaluation tools don't register a value for it and asking him what range he is looking for. Is there a better strategy to use?

    It's a non-generic name like a dot net version of stubhub.com or fogdog.com.
