Offensive image of Michelle Obama - How did it get ranked?

There was an offensive image showing up as the number one result in Google Image search when you search for Michelle Obama. She was distorted to look monkey-like.

When I saw an article on this, I assumed someone made an SEO effort to get the ranking, so I had two questions:
    1. How did they get ranked so well for such a term with so much competition? Traditional Google bombing?
    2. Assuming there was a black hat technique they exploited, why didn't Google countered the exploit right away?

Google's immediate response was to run Google Ads stating something about offensive images may appear from time to time. It looks like they have manually removed the image from the results.

It would be possible to re-upload an already well ranked unoffensive jpg with an offensive jpg with the same name.
There would be nothing google could do about it until it was bought to thier attention.

    Shocking stuff though.

    It ranks because:

    1) People are searching for it
    2) People are linking to it

I think the picture is hilarious! It's not like she is queen or anything... no one was complaining when Palin was getting targeted (those were also funny). People are free to express themselves as they wish and why should we care if ranks well in google.

    BTW I'm not a Republican, I'm Libertarian!

I do like how it seems to be googles fault that the image is being shown, and that not much is being said about the people or person that hosted and ranked the image. Here in the uk people are saying google is racist, makes me laugh how something like this can be blown out of proportion so much. Should all the images that show white people for the term 'honky' be taken down cuz its racist and all the images of black people for the term 'nigger'. Thats the type of world we seem to be entering!

This is a web master forum, we should understand what causing things to rank.

This was the most useful answer.

Im sure that 99% of people that have seen this image thought it was funny, so it may have ranked well with the traffic it recieved. It only takes one politicly correct person to spoil a funny image because they think it offends someone.
Over the past 8 years i remember seeing hundreds of images of george bush as a chimp... now why isn't that offensive? Is it because he isn't black?

The image was not removed, google will not remove images, they will just warn it may be offensive!

I don't see any of such images even while searching for it. Perhaps it has been removed from being indexed.
