    guest blogging is not a waste of time because not only does it work well for backlinks you are now introducing your content to another set of visitors and if they find your content to be interesting they will become your visitors.

    As per the Google update, many websites are penalized. At present SEO comapnies rarely doing directory and social bookmarking submission. Quality work is most prior for the top ranking.
    You can submit link on quality directory and bookmarking site.
    Moreover, unique article posting and guest posting is the best way to get natural and quality links.

    Well, I think there some other main techniques which helps you make back links are Forum Posting, Blog Comment, Two way link building, Guest Post, Web 2.0 etc.. There are good list of book marking which really helps to create back links like reddit, stumble, digoo, delious, mob etc
