october 10th is the international day against capital punishment. there is no place in a civilised world for this barbaric form of punishment, by killing others we become as bad as them. no matter what the crime, capital punishment is not the answer. even jalal talabani a leading member of the iraqi government refused to sign saddams death warrant because he does not support capital punishment, and this from a kurd whose family members had been executed on saddams say so. join amnesty international and make a real difference in the fight against capital punishment.
Personally, I don't care if repeat offenders of rape and murder go to the grave, i'm not sure why you do.
Are you saying what they say in prison is true.. that "everyone is innocent"? There are ways to prove the illegal actions of some criminals and they would still deny it.
I support capital punishment. Whats the point of keeping rapists, murderers and child molesters (some examples) alive and be a burden to the society? and they are likely to be repeat offenders when they are let loose. Besides, when innocent people are killed around the world on daily basis, killing a couple of dozen (which is a huge number) a day doesn't really matter.
i think it is very sad that anyone in the 21st century supports capital punishment, but it is your choice. just the other week forty young people were hung in iran for crimes against the state, probably just speaking out against a repressive government. can you not see that by supporting capital punishment you are condoning the taking of innocent lives, and even those who are guilty as charged should not be executed, for then the executors are stooping to the same level. killing doesn't solve anything, we have tried that form of punishment for centuries and it has never stopped people committing crimes.
Those are problems within countries without free speech and has nothing to do with supporting capital punishment. It just goes to show why we live in a great country where there is freedom and you can speak your opinions.
if you support capital punishment you support it everywhere whether that country has freedom of speech or not. the principle is the same, it is used as a form of punishment for a recognised crime in that particular country . you cannot differentiate, you either support it or you don't, it's your choice as i said.
Sure you can, just because I support capital punishment doesn't mean that I support it for stealing a piece of bubble gum from the local grocery store. The basis behind any form of punishment is "Does the punishment fit the crime?".
but who decides which punishment fits the crime? in some countries stealing may well result in the death penalty. and no crime should ever result in a life being taken, no matter how heinous. in the UK capital punishment has been banned as a barbaric form of punishment for half a century and the same is true of most european countries. this is the 21st century, and if we want a an end to the constant killing around the world in various conflicts, can we not start by ending capital punishment. killing is fundamentally wrong.
I second that! Why are people serving multiple life sentence being kept in prison? Yet we have to feed them on tax payer's money. They are born a criminal and die a criminal. If im not wrong, Prison were made for correctional purposes. If people are serving multiple life sentences (theres no way they are ever getting out), i doubt if their regret or change will make any difference to the general public anymore.
As Grumps said just above this post, we have people within the prison system, being held in worse conditions than a dog in a lot of cases, but we're talking about capital punishment (which as far as I know is a painless process, different from the electric chair or hanging someone) as being barbaric? Let me ask you this question, do you believe that there are repeat criminals who simply do not have the mental capability to be rehabilitated?
perhaps this is my fault, i just wish that people could see the bigger picture here. terrorists in iraq behead westerners because they see them as being sympathetic to the iraqi invasion, of course this is barbaric and everyone with a sane mind would see it as completely and utterly wrong, but they believe that they are justified and would argue their case as vehemently as you argue yours. in iran children as young as 13 are hung. perhaps their hard line supporters agree with you that this saves money, in that they don't have to serve their sentence in jail. whether a person is being executed in a clinically clean cell in an american jail or halfway across the world in a public square, you support the act of execution, the principle of capital punishment. we can split hairs all night but that is the bottom line here.
I think our difference of opinions is that I don't think it is quite as black and white as you view it. I do think there is a time and a place for it, and for some crimes, it is unwarranted. I suppose thats why we may not have a perfect system, but it is almost as perfect as you can get.
