This is a way off plan but I'd figure I'd ask around and see if anyone could point me in the right direction. Currently I have a streaming anime site that uses videos hosted on sites like Veoh. But when I get some money (a lot more money lol) I'd like to expand the site like Hulu has but in the direction of anime. If anime goes well I'll expand further. Since this idea would be large and I suspect popular, I would most certainly want streaming rights to the anime so I can host the videos on my own dedicated server. Also I'd like to stay on the right side of the law So the questions are: 1. How would one go about getting these rights? 2. How much would they be? (Id expect a lot, but I'd like to figure out how much exactly[I know it would differ]). 3. What are the limitations in using them? I've googled the answers but can't come up with anything. So I was hoping to maybe find some knowledgeable individuals here. ((dont tell me to ask the anime companies, Im just doing small research for a long term, and well off time wise project, I'm not ready to take that sorta step yet))
Sorry toots, but that IS your answer. You have to obtain 'rights' or a license from the original copyright holder. Veoh, MySpace and most anime sites do not have 'rights' for the video they are streaming. Same as most celeb sites do not have the 'copyright' or license either. While most of the time a studio, or celeb, will just e-mail you asking you to remove it n 24 or 48 hours instead of suing you. The fact of the matter is that unless you are licensed, or given permission, then it's not legal. If you are going down this track, I'd recommend you form an LLC ($300-500) so if you are sued, you do not loose all your sh**. This comes from someone who MAKES original content, and deals with copyright on both sides of the fence daily. Do not let the DP internet esquires tell you differently. Good luck toots.
Thanks. I guess I'll have to ask them, I was thinking of starting with Viz Media (one of the US Anime Licensors). I've been on the web for years now, but I've been considering this idea for a bit. I think I can make my dent on the web with this idea. Just gotta get my degree before i can even think of undertaking it. Thanks for helping
